Poverty, access to education, abuse, limited health care, and discrimination are all causes and effects of the opportunity gap between women and men. The UNDP estimates that female losses in achievement due to gender inequality range anywhere from 17 percent to 85 percent. Happily, these numbers are improving steadily over time.

Many organizations and individuals are making tremendous efforts to narrow the gap through promotion of rights at work principles, social protections, increasing awareness and fostering dialogue.
